Edinburgh is a paranormal enthusiast’s paradise, with spirits and spectres seemingly around almost every corner and up every close.
In recent years, its best known hauntings are the fascinating stories of the ghosts in the underground vaults and the MacKenzie poltergeist in the graveyard at Greyfriars Kirk. However, if you look beyond these incredible modern tales, you'll find hundreds of years worth of history and spooky goings-on.
Edinburgh has it all – ghostly pipers, Egyptian spirits, white ladies, warlocks, and witches, to name just a few.

Edinburgh has always been a hotspot for tourists. From the world famous festival taking place in July and August, to its huge Hogmanay celebration attracting people from all over the world to see in the new year. It's no surprise that the darker side of Edinburgh’s history has become almost as much of a tourist draw as the more traditional attractions.
The city has had numerous nicknames over the years, probably it's most famous being ‘Auld Reekie’ on account of the air pollution from the various factories once operating in the city. It's now more commonly known as ‘The City of the dead’ and is arguably known as the most haunted city in the world – although York may have something to say about that.
Look beyond the famous ghosts of the old town and you'll find a history of hauntings; from Morningside to Leith. Here, on this site, I’ll aim to capture as many of the less famous stories as I can.
