Ancient Edinburgh: A Thousand Years of Life, Death, Murder, Intrigue—and Ghosts!
Edinburgh is a paranormal enthusiast’s paradise, with spirits and spectres seemingly lurking around every corner and up every close.
In recent years,
The city’s best-known hauntings include the chilling tales of the ghosts in the underground vaults and the infamous MacKenzie Poltergeist in the graveyard at Greyfriars Kirk. However, if you look beyond these spine-tingling modern legends, you’ll uncover hundreds of years’ worth of history and eerie encounters.
Edinburgh has it all—ghostly pipers, Egyptian spirits, white ladies, warlocks, and witches, to name just a few.
Edinburgh has always been a hotspot for tourists. From the world-famous festival in July and August to its massive Hogmanay celebrations, the city draws visitors from around the globe. It’s no surprise that the darker side of Edinburgh’s history has become as much of an attraction as its more traditional sights.
The city has had many nicknames over the years, the most famous being ‘Auld Reekie’—a nod to the smoke and air pollution from the factories of the past. Today, it’s often referred to as ‘The City of the Dead’, and some argue it’s the most haunted city in the world—though York might have something to say about that.
Look beyond the famous ghosts of the Old Town, and you’ll discover a tapestry of hauntings across the city—from Morningside to Leith. Here, on this site, I’ll aim to capture some of the lesser-known tales that make Edinburgh’s haunted history so fascinating.
